Athletes from 46 countries will compete the European Championship 10m in Maribor, Slovenia
European Championship 10m rifle, pistol and running target 2017 will take place in Maribor, Slovenia. 577 athletes from 46 European countries will compete at the Championship in totally 716 competitive starts because some of athletes will compete in more than one discipline. European Championship will take place at two venues. Qualification rounds and running target competition will be held in Draš Center, final rounds and medal races will be competed in Turner Hall of nearby Hotel Habakuk. Both venues are situated just outside the city of Maribor, under Pohorje hills, internationally known as ski and tourist resort. 2017 European Championship will for the first time feature team events in new format which is aimed to make the shooting sport much more attractive for audience at the venue and at home in front of the TV. Medals will be awarded in junior and senior categories.
“Considering the fact that this year championship is held only few months after Olympic games that usually conclude competitive cycles, we are very satisfied with number of entries of athletes that will compete in Maribor. Number of champions and medalists of European or World Championships as well as Olympic games entered, so we expect the competition to be at the very high level,” said Mr. Ljubo Germič, president of the Organizing committee. “We are in the middle of final technical preparations in these days and we aim to enable athletes with best possible conditions, so they can achieve their best results. European Shooting Confederation made some decisive steps in recent past to make shooting sport more attractive for audience at the venue and media, especially television. We see this steps very important for popularization and future development of our sport,” pointed out Mr. Germič and added that over 4000 guests overnight stays are expected in the city of Maribor in the time of the Championship.
Opening ceremony of the Championship will be held on Tuesday, February 7th at 6pm. Athletes and guests will be greeted and welcomed by dr. Miro Cerar, president of the Government of Republic of Slovenia and president of the Honorary Committee of the Championship and by Mr. Vladimir Lisin, president of European Shooting Confederation. Students of Maribor II. Gimnazija high scool and Brass band Slovenija will perform musical acts at the opening ceremony and a special tribute will be performed by Honour Guard of Slovenian Armed Forces.
